What is the abortion pill?

The abortion pill — also referred to as medication abortion, chemical abortion, RU-486 or self-managed abortion — is usually used to reference the medications mifepristone and misoprostol taken to terminate the pregnancy of a developing baby within the first 11 weeks. It is NOT the morning-after pill. Currently, over 70% of all abortions in Montana occur through the abortion pill. The abortion pill is prescribed by a provider up to 11 weeks of pregnancy. The first medication, mifepristone, blocks the effects of progesterone – a natural hormone that women produce that provides the essential nutrients needed for the developing baby to thrive. The second medication, misoprostol, is taken at home usually within 48 hours after mifepristone and causes cramping and bleeding in order to empty the uterus.

Can the abortion pill be reversed?

The simple answer is yes! There is an effective process called abortion pill reversal that can potentially reverse the effects of the abortion pill and allow a woman to continue her pregnancy. After taking the first pill, mifepristone, some women regret their choice and want to save their pregnancy. An abortion may be reversed after taking mifepristone, but, before misoprostol. Using the natural hormone progesterone, medical professionals have been able to save 64-68% of pregnancies through an abortion pill reversal process.
